Strength in Stability: Navigating Change with Confidence

If you’re someone who struggles with change or uncertainty, you’re not alone. In fact, I don’t know many people who don’t. Life is full of shifts—some expected, some sudden—and the way we navigate them can shape our well-being. The key to handling change with less stress lies in having a strong, stable foundation to rely on.

You may have heard of Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, which highlights the fundamental importance of feeling safe and secure. When we have a deep sense of stability, we can better manage life’s uncertainties. Interestingly, this concept mirrors the way our bodies function.

The Connection Between Stability and Flexibility

In movement, just as in life, we need core strength and postural stability to allow for spinal flexibility. Without a strong core, we cannot move safely, efficiently, or comfortably. Our spine is protected by vertebrae and ligaments, but also by the deep core muscles—small, stabilising muscles that work subtly, over long periods, to provide support.

These core muscles differ from the movement muscles, which generate flexibility and power. Movement muscles—like your calf muscles when you run, your thigh muscles when you walk downstairs, or your biceps when you lift something—are designed for short bursts of effort at high intensity. But they can only work effectively when they have a stable base to operate from.

Without core strength, flexibility becomes unsafe. This is true not just physically, but mentally and emotionally as well. When we cultivate a strong internal foundation—whether through routines, self-care, mindset work, or supportive communities—we develop the resilience to adapt, change, and grow while staying grounded.

Building Your Inner Stability

Just as we strengthen our physical core, we can build our emotional and psychological core. Developing self-awareness, establishing supportive habits, and surrounding ourselves with a compassionate, like-minded community all contribute to a greater sense of security. From this place of inner strength, we can embrace change with confidence rather than fear.
