How To Be Happier: Chapter 2
By
Sue Palmer

April 2, 2021
Meditation You might think it’s not for you. But maybe the word meditation has become a bit cliched. We think of sitting quietly with our legs crossed. That’s not something that all of us either want to or are able to do. How about, if instead of the word meditation, you thought of another activity. […]

Can A Disc Slip?
By
Sue Palmer
on
April 1, 2021
“Can a disc slip? The simple answer is no. It’s a layman’s term that is unfortunately very misleading to the general public. “My disc has slipped out, can you put it back in” is not an uncommon conversation opener on the telephone…..” This is the beginning of the most recent e-newsletter from The Pain Relief […]

Variety

Variety is the spice of life, so they say. In the many months of lockdown in the UK in 2020 / 2021, there weren’t so many activities to choose from. Retail, leisure, and entertainment industries were all closed. We were restricted in how far we could travel, and who we could meet with. In some […]

How To Be Happier: Introduction
By
Sue Palmer

March 27, 2021
I wonder whether I’m being a bit presumptuous writing this. Then I think, if just one thing I say makes a difference to even one person, that’s good enough for me. So I’m giving it my best shot. As one of my favourite authors Brene Brown would say, I’m being awkward, brave, and kind. Please […]

The Importance of Good Saddle Fit, by Dr Sue Dyson
By

March 26, 2021
A study of 63 horses, in normal work and presumed by their owners to be working comfortably, was performed and we showed that the average changes in back dimensions were greater in horses working correctly compared with those not working correctly. The changes were also influenced by rider skill. Rider ability was categorised as: good - the rider was consistently in rhythm and balance, was sympathetic and showed correct use of the aids; moderate – the rider had knowledge of the basic principles of riding ‘on the bit’, but lacked core strength and stability, or did not consistently apply the aids correctly; and poor – the rider had poor knowledge or ability to ride a horse ‘on the bit’ and / or was very unbalanced. The changes in back dimensions were greatest for the good riders and smallest for the poorly skilled riders.

With courses, horse help, membership (including a fantastic magazine and over 40 hours of online footage availabe to members), Intelligent Horsemanship has been helping horses and their owners for over 20 years. I’ve been a member of the Intelligent Horsemanship, from the very beginning. I remember, really early on, discussions with people about how this […]

How to… Box Rest: Conclusion
By
Sue Palmer
on
March 24, 2021
In my experience, box rest is generally more stressful for the owner than it is for the horse. Having said that, there are very definitely horses who struggle with it. Sometimes the effects can be long lasting. That makes it important to do our best to reduce the risks of stress related behaviour from the […]

Surrender

I hadn’t thought about surrendering as working with, rather than giving up. When I search for the definition of surrender I get: “stop resisting to an enemy or opponent and submit to their authority.” And “give up or hand over (a person, right, or possession), typically on compulsion or demand.” Listening to a podcast recently, […]

Why it matters who your friends are

Think about the last time you chose a restaurant because it was packed with people, or bought a product because it had numerous positive reviews. This is an example of something called 'social proof', a psychological phenomenon that influences our decisions.

How to.. Box Rest: Chapter 10
By

March 21, 2021
Core Stability Core strength helps to maintain comfort during periods of enforced rest, and is definitely going to be important once your horse starts to come back into ridden work. Core strength supports the back, reducing the risk of pain or injury. It allows the horse to lift through his forehand, and to bring his […]
