27 May 2021, we passed our Drive500 mile marker – 14 days early! 500.8 miles took us from home to the home of a friend at Rossglass. We had lunch with Grainne (pronounced Gron-ya), then took Rebel onto Minerstown beach – his first introduction to the beach, and where I learned to walk! We had a lovely day, quite an emotional one for me, as I hadn’t been convinced that I would achieve the 500 mile goal. And suitably celebrated with the surprise of bubbles supplied by The Husband!
As it turned out, we continued with the challenge until the 12 months deadline, and clocked up a grand total of 535.1 miles! I was quite overwhelmed by actually being able to achieve this challenge, as it had looked very ambitious to start with, and my first couple of attempts were sabotaged by first my, then pony, ill-health.
I contacted In Harness magazine to report that I’d finally completed their challenge, and was invited to submit an article, responses to questions about our journey. Hopefully our tale will encourage other drivers to persist when adversity seems insurmountable, although I now believe the magazine folded before my tale was told, so perhaps another time.
