On 6th November 2021, I was delighted to be part of the innovative virtual event, ‘Fit For Welfare’, hosted by the Society of Master Saddlers (SMS). Today I’m sharing with you some of my learning from the day.
In a twist that I haven’t seen at other online conferences, the day began with an address from HRH The Princess Royal. To me, this was a reminder of just how important tack is in terms of the welfare of the horse.
Dr Celeste Wilkins discussed the research she’s been involved in around different riding styles. Based at Hartpury University, she and her team have used technology to assess the movement of riders on the horse, and have discovered a variety of patterns. Celeste is hopeful that this new knowledge might be used to further develop training techniques, and to improve the welfare of both horse and rider.
Take home message: There are many different styles of riding, even within the same movement, for example rising trot.
